From Hot Springs to Diamonds: A Sweltering Adventure

After two blissful nights at Finish Line RV Park and our incredibly relaxing thermal bath experience at Quapaw Baths & Spa, it was time to bid farewell to Hot Springs. But our Arkansas adventure was far from over; our next stop was Craters of Diamond State Park, the only place in the world where you can search for diamonds and keep what you find!

The Truck Troubles Loom Large

As we prepared to leave Hot Springs, those intermittent truck issues from our arrival kept gnawing at me. Sure, the engine had been running smoothly during our stay, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were just borrowing time. With 65 miles still ahead of us to reach the state park, and another 200 miles beyond that to our final destination at The Boulders at Tyler Lake in Texas, I knew I couldn’t just hope the problem would magically disappear.

Our planned three-night stay at the state park suddenly seemed like more than just a diamond hunting adventure; it might be exactly the window we needed to get the truck properly diagnosed and repaired. There’s nothing quite like potential mechanical failure to add urgency to your vacation planning.

I pulled out my phone and started searching for diesel repair shops near Murfreesboro. Castle Repair LLC caught my attention immediately. Twenty-eight glowing five-star reviews don’t lie, and one review in particular jumped out at me: “If you need emergency repairs on your truck while stranded near Murfreesboro, THIS IS THE CREW TO CALL!!” That sounded exactly like what we might need.

Taking a deep breath, I placed the call.

A Lifeline in Murfreesboro

Jared, the owner, answered personally: always a good sign. When I explained our situation and my suspicion about the failed injector, his response was music to my ears: “If you can get the truck here by 4 this afternoon, I can have the part ordered and delivered by tomorrow morning.”

I assured him we’d be there well before 4. But then he said something that really impressed me: “Once you get your RV set up at the park, just come back to the shop and I’ll give you a ride back.” Now that’s what I call service. Here’s a guy who understands that RV travelers aren’t just passing through with a broken truck; we’re hauling our home behind us and need to get settled before dealing with repairs.

The Test Drive to Murfreesboro

We decided, since the truck seemed to be running fine now, why not make the 65 or so miles without turning on the AC. I was hoping this would either prove or disprove that the air conditioner may have been the culprit. The good news: we made the entire trip without a single hiccup. The truck ran smoothly and showed no signs of the troubling symptoms we’d experienced before. While this was reassuring for getting us safely to our destination, it also meant we still didn’t have a clear answer about what was causing the intermittent problems.

The Diagnostic Dilemma

I arrived at Castle Repair around 3 PM, right on schedule. Jared greeted me warmly and immediately got to work, bringing out his heavy-duty multi-brand diagnostic tablet, a much more sophisticated unit than my basic OBDII scanner. This thing could analyze all of the truck’s systems, not just check for basic trouble codes.

The results were both good news and bad news rolled into one: he didn’t receive any errors. While it was reassuring that nothing was actively failing at the moment, it also meant we couldn’t pinpoint the exact problem. Making matters more challenging, since I had cleared the trouble codes earlier with my scanner, there wasn’t any diagnostic history to reference.

Jared wasn’t deterred. “We need to replicate the issue,” he explained. His plan was ingenious: hook up a trailer to the truck and drive it up several of Arkansas’s steeper hills until the engine got hot enough and under enough load to start sputtering again, and he’d also test the air conditioning system to see if that might be contributing to the problem. Only when the problem actually occurred could he properly diagnose what was causing it.

As promised, he drove me back to the state park and dropped me off right at our campsite. But before leaving, he made one final gesture that really floored me: “If you folks need anything from the store or anything else while you’re here, just give me a call and I’ll be happy to pick it up for you.” This level of customer service was beyond anything I’d experienced at a repair shop.

The Waiting Game

And now, the hardest part of any repair situation: waiting. Jared would soon be out there somewhere, driving our truck up and down Arkansas hills with a trailer in tow, trying to coax our intermittent problem into showing itself. Meanwhile, we were settled into our campsite at the state park, wondering what news the phone might bring.

We decided to skip the diamond hunting for now and just enjoy some quiet time to ourselves. Instead of worrying about what Jared might discover, we spent the afternoon walking the park’s nature trails and simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Sometimes the best part of RV travel is those unplanned moments when you can just slow down and appreciate where you are.
